With wind speeds at 25 mph, large branches on trees will move with utility wires swaying. Here older trees are a particular risk since weak branches can fall onto rooftops, lawns, parking lots, or streets.

At this speed the National Weather Service will issue a wind advisory. You may have difficulty driving with small unsecured objects such as plastic lawn furniture can be blown around. Entire trees will be moving at this speed.

At 40 mph winds a High Wind Watch will be given by the NWS. Home and business owners should secure all loose objects outside of the property and unnecessary driving should be postponed. Walking can become difficult with tree twigs and small branches breaking. Roofs can be particularly vulnerable since loose shingles can be lifted which can expose roof substrates to water.

The highest risk of damages to properties occurs here at wind speeds of 65 mph and above. Travel is very dangerous and heavy to severe structural and tree damage can occur.
